Benefits of a Heated Driveway

  1. Increased Safety: A Heated Driveway reduces the risk of slips and falls, as well as damage to your car or property from snow and ice.
  2. Physical Health: Shovelling your driveway all winter long can cause strain on your health. Shovelling is also hard on the surface of your driveway, especially if combined with the use of chemicals. A heated driveway system eliminates the need for ploughing, shovelling, and the use of chemicals.
  3. Savings in the Long Run: A Heated Driveway can save money on snow removal services, equipment, chemicals, and time. Shovelling and ploughing are time-consuming and can be hard on the surface of your driveway. A heated driveway can extend the lifespan of your driveway by preventing cracks and erosion.
  4. Market Value: A Heated Driveway adds value to your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers.
  5. Comfort and Luxury: A Heated Driveway can enhance your comfort by providing a warm and welcoming entrance to your home. You can also use it for other purposes, such as heating your walkway, patio, or pool area.

Types of Heated Driveway Systems

Heated Driveway Systems use heat technology to warm up the surface of your driveway and melt the snow and ice. We offer two types of Heated Driveway Systems: electric and hydronic

Ready to design a heated driveway system?

Electric Driveway Heating

Electric driveway heating systems use electric cables or mats that get embedded under pavers or the asphalt of your driveway. The cables or mats then connect to a thermostat that controls the temperature and timing of the system. Electric heating systems must be plugged into the power source. These heat systems are reliable, easy to install, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance.

Electric driveway heating systems are recommended for smaller to medium-sized driveways due to their ease of installation, lower upfront cost, and insignificant operating costs for smaller surfaces.

Hydronic Driveway Heating

A hydronic driveway heating system uses flexible tubing that gets laid under the surface of your driveway. The tubing carries glycol (anti-freeze) that circulates through a boiler or heat pump. The heat is transferred to the driveway's surface, melting the snow and ice. The thermostat can turn on and off automatically based on the sensors in the driveway.

A hydronic driveway heating system is more powerful, versatile, and eco-friendly than an electric system. It is suitable for large or irregular-shaped driveways due to its strong heating power and the cost savings that come with bigger projects. With these systems, the initial price of the boiler and other equipment is fixed and will only incrementally increase with large sized driveways. This means that the larger the driveway, the less it costs for each square foot, making it a more budget-friendly option as the driveway size increases. The average installation cost for a hydronic system is $43.75 per square foot. The average operating cost for a hydronic system is $0.10 per hour per 100 square feet.

Installation Process

Step 1: Design

Our designers at Precision Landscaping will design your heated driveway system based on site parameters, square footage, and budget.

Step 2: Site Preparation & Excavation

This process generally includes the removal of the existing pavement, grading the soil, and laying the insulation, cables, and other materials.
If the heating system is a hydronic driveway system, during this stage, a concrete slab would be laid.

Step 3: System Installation

We will install the system according to your specifications and preferences. This generally includes laying the cables, mats, or tubing, connecting them to the power source or boiler, and installing sensors or thermostats.

Step 4: System Testing

During this stage we will test the heated driveway system to ensure that it is working properly and efficiently.

Step 5: Finishing Driveway

During this stage the driveway will be finished by the finish of concrete. If the system is a hydronic driveway heating system the driveway can also be finished with architectural concrete, pavers, asphalt, or natural or man-made stone.
